Shall I This Time Hold You? documents a point of change – a transitory state between two absolutes. It is an attempt to capture an ephemeral moment whilst at the same time celebrating the impossibility of doing so. Combining a complex technical process with the poetics of motion and transformation, a series of explosions become temporal sculptures. They are objects of beauty, now gone, captured in a chance moment as a material undergoes a process of violent change.
The title of the piece is taken from the dedication at the beginning of Goethe’s Faust, in which he speaks of memory and the futile yearning to return and hold on to that moment which is passed
